Cybercrime Investigation and Digital Forensics: Technological Challenges in the Modern Criminal Justice System

The rapid expansion of digital technologies has fundamentally transformed the nature of criminal activity and the methods used for its investigation. Cybercrime increasingly involves computers, smartphones, cloud platforms, encrypted communications, digital financial systems, and interconnected networks. As a result, digital forensics has become an essential component of modern criminal investigations. This article examines the technological challenges associated with the collection, preservation, examination, and presentation of digital evidence in cybercrime investigations. Particular attention is given to cloud-based evidence, encryption, mobile devices, deleted data, metadata, blockchain transactions, artificial intelligence, and the preservation of digital evidence integrity. The article argues that conventional investigative methods are insufficient for increasingly complex digital environments and that law-enforcement agencies require advanced forensic capabilities, specialized expertise, and standardized technological procedures. It further examines the importance of chain of custody, forensic imaging, evidence authentication, and reproducibility of forensic analysis.
